U.S. - Elephant Seals Return to Central Coast of California... Elephant seals warm themselves on the beach at Piedras Blancas south of Vista Point 3 on Highway One. Once thought extinct, Elephant Seals have made a resounding comeback north of Morro Bay, in California. A $5,000 reward is offered for information about the killings of the animals, protected under the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act. Three northern elephant seals were found shot dead Saturday morning at the Point Piedras Blancas elephant seal colony near San Simeon, Calif., five miles north of Hearst Castle, authorities said.
